Exporting your data to KML (Google Earth)

RivEX allows you export the river network, nodes, mouths and sources to KML. You can choose the display colour of your data and any fields you wish to be included within the description of the feature.  RivEX will export all or only selected features.

Google Earth is not intended to replace high end commercial GIS and therefore does not have all the features you associate with using a GIS, especially if you are using the free  version of Google Earth.

KML is a verbose file format and will produce very large files if you export large networks.  As a benchmark; a 140,000 polyline network was exported with selected fields and generated a KML file of 245MB!  Needless to say Google Earth failed to load such a large file.  Due to the large size a river network can achieve it is suggested that you use KML for providing samples or as teaching material.

To download a sample of KML output (56Kb file size) created by RivEX, click on the Google Earth icon below. You computer may open the file directly otherwise you can save it to your computer and open it from within Google Earth using the menu option File > Open.
